(Atlanta, GA--November 7. 2023) The Southern Unity Movement, an Atlanta-based social justice organization committed to building a more unified Black LGBTQ+ community through advocacy, education, and recreation, and the official organizer of the Bayard Rustin/Audre Lorde Breakfast, will return to The Loudermilk Center in downtown Atlanta on January 15, 2024, for the annual Rustin/ Lorde Breakfast. Now in its 22nd year, the Black LGBTQ+ signature event honors the legacies of civil rights pioneers and change agents Bayard Rustin and Audre Lorde through a culturally inclusive program that embodies Dr. Martin Luther King's vision of a beloved community.
Ms. Tori Cooper, Director of the Human Rights Campaign's Community Engagement for the Transgender Justice Initiative and the first Black trans woman to serve on the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, will be the Mistress of Ceremony for the 2024 Breakfast.
Tim'm West, poet, professor, and Executive Director of The LGBTO Institute at The National Center for Civil and Human Rights, will also be featured. Cooper and West's participation will aid in furthering our commitment to social justice in all areas, including health equity, anti-racism, a livable income, and gender equality.
This year's Breakfast aims to expand our youth space to intentionally include 14 to 16-year-olds in a challenge to use technology to produce digital messages about how the lives of Rustin and Lorde fit into the current social justice landscape. "It is our hope and prayer that this year's Breakfast will encourage attendees to envision a better future and to actively engage and hold accountable the powers that be to deliver and practice a democracy that truly represents all people and embraces Equality," said Darlene Hudson. "In the spirit of Audre Lorde, I am reminded that using my strength in the service of my vision for a more just, democratic society is a way to struggle with courage."
The Southern Unity Movement is proud to have The Tiger's Eye Collective, Sister Song, Georgia Equality Foundation, BEAM, and The Center for Black Equity as early fiscal sponsors of the 2024 Breakfast. We encourage individuals and organizations interested in supporting us financially to contact The Southern Unity Movement ASAP.
Media outlets interested in providing pre and post-Rustin/Lorde Breakfast coverage are encouraged to contact Darlene Hudson, Organizer and Co-Founder of The Southern Unity Movement.
